Room by room fit
Vinyl plank (rigid core)The safest all round pick. Waterproof planks, little movement, hides sand scratches.
Porcelain tileIgnores humidity and water. Cold and hard underfoot; costs more to install.
Waterproof laminateStrong in soak tests and cheaper than vinyl plank. Harder feel.
Engineered hardwoodReal wood that moves much less than wide solid boards. Not for full bathrooms.
Solid hardwoodFine in narrow widths with steady air conditioning. Wide planks cup and gap.
CarpetFine in bedrooms in a cool, dry house. Pad with a moisture barrier helps on a slab.

Humidity Moves Wood

Wood takes on moisture from the air and gives it back. Wide solid planks show this the most as gaps in dry months and cupping in damp ones. Engineered wood, with its cross layered plywood core, moves far less.

Keep the air conditioning running, including when you are away, and let any wood floor acclimate in the house before install.

The Slab Comes Up Too

Most homes here sit on concrete slabs that release moisture from the ground. Any floor over a slab needs the right barrier, and wood and laminate need a moisture test first. Read flooring over a concrete slab.

Sand and Salt Air at the Beach

Near the ocean, sand comes in on every pair of shoes and acts like sandpaper on finishes. Vinyl plank held up best to grit in stress tests, laminate second and engineered wood worst. Tile shrugs it off.

Mats at every door, shoes off and a quick daily sweep matter more near the beach than anywhere else.

Water in the Kitchen and Bath

Every kitchen and bath gets wet eventually. In long soak tests, rigid core vinyl plank and modern waterproof laminate showed no swelling, while engineered wood swelled at the edges.

So keep engineered wood out of bathrooms with a tub or shower. Kitchens are fine with prompt cleanup.

Our Short Answer

For most Jacksonville houses, rigid core vinyl plank in the living areas and kitchen, tile in the bathrooms and carpet or vinyl plank in the bedrooms is the low worry combination.

If you want real wood, engineered hardwood in the living and dining rooms works well with good air conditioning. Compare luxury vinyl plank flooring installation and engineered hardwood flooring installation.

Storm Season

No floor is flood proof. Tile survives standing water best, and vinyl plank can sometimes be lifted, dried and relaid. If your house is in a flood prone area near the river, that is worth weighing. See water damaged floor replacement.
