General ranges for planning, not a quote. Material, prep, the size of the job and the contractor set the real number, and prices move over time.
An Example Breakdown
One real example of about a thousand square feet with a premium triexta carpet broke down like this.
Around four dollars a square foot for the carpet, a separate charge for pad, then removal, installation and furniture moving per square foot, and stairs and delivery as flat fees.
All in, that came to roughly seven to eight dollars a square foot. A mid range carpet in the same house would have landed lower.
What Changes the Price
- Fiber. Polyester is the cheapest. Nylon and triexta cost more but last far longer.
- Style. Patterns and heavier constructions cost more and take more care to seam.
- Pad. Heavier pads and pads with moisture barriers cost more and help the carpet last.
- Layout. Stairs, closets, corners and small hallways add time.
Waste and Seams
Carpet comes in fixed width rolls, so the amount you buy is usually more than the room's square footage. Some of that is seams and fit. Ask how much of the order is waste, and whether the installer laid out the seams to keep it low.
The Lowball Quote
When one carpet quote is much lower, there is usually a reason. The fiber may be polyester instead of nylon, or removal, furniture moving or stairs may be missing. Those come back as extra charges, or as carpet that needs replacing in a few years.
Ask every installer whether they power stretch. Knee kicker only installs tend to ripple.
Spending Smart on Carpet
Put durable fiber in the rooms that see the most traffic, like the family room, hallways and stairs. A guest bedroom can take a lower grade. A good pad is one of the cheaper upgrades that makes the biggest difference underfoot.
See carpet installation for fiber and pad details and stair flooring installation for stairs.
